BMW Hydrogen Cars
« on: May 29, 2007, 11:12:14 AM »
BMW has cars that...
Run on water
Emit water vapor at the tailpipe
Fill automatically with robots
Use hydrogen made from sunlight
...and they have been at it for over 30 years!

Hydrogen as a motor fuel is the answer to many environmental problems since there are no harmful emissions, no depleting of resources, no danger to the atmosphere, and it can be produced from a variety of renewable resources.

The BMW solution is a Clean Energy system where liquid hydrogen is produced from water using solar power, the hydrogen is dispensed from automated filling stations and it powers modified BMW production vehicles.

Since the 70's, BMW has been researching the future of mobility. Their first hydrogen car was the BMW 750hL hydrogen powered vehicle.

The 745h is the latest BMW hydrogen powered vehicle. The 745h is powered by a 4.4-liter V8, featuring bi-VANOS variable valve timing, Valvetronic variable intake runners, and a fully variable intake manifold. The 745h can use either hydrogen or premium unleaded gasoline.

Running on hydrogen, the 745h produces 184 horsepower and can achieve a top speed of 133 mph. The cruising range is 190 miles. Added to the 400-mile range of the normal fuel tank, the 745h can go 600 miles between fill-ups.

An Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) runs the 745h's power-consuming features. The APU operates on a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell that is independent of the engine, thanks to a direct hydrogen feed from the trunk-mounted tank. This means power accessories like air conditioning can be operated when the engine is shut off, saving a gallon of gas for every 235 miles of city driving.

they have been around for awhile, BMW gave them to some celebs in Souther Cal. in 2007 i believe. The commercials are hard to miss because they fill a clear 7 with water if that makes sense. 7's are great cars and the technology is there, just not enough fueling stations.

I did see there was a Green home built in Malibu that won several awards and it was for sale, BMW offered a 3 year lease on a hydro 7 to the buyer of the home.
Kudos to BMW for pushing Hydrogen and for putting it in their flagship car.

Regards..

I spent 20 hours on the internet and ended up with more questions than answers so I started experimenting last march. I'm on proto type 15 and it works. But it is not the silver bullet we wish for.
I can get small to normal size pickups and cars 40% better mileage easy with 2 hydro Generators. But only if they are 2000 or newer.
Why????
The software they have now is called leaning software. Making the gas is easy , not melting the container is a bit harder.
When the gas goes into the air intake it goes pass the o2 sencer and sends a message to the computer and the computers adjusts the o2. Same when it goes threw the exhaust the sencer there sences the the fuel is tooo rich and starts to turn off the gas and in my 2005 dodge I'm running about 60 % hydrogen gas and 40% regualr gas.
The big savings is not from the hydrogen but from the 25% eff. engine now burns about 50% eff. and thats the major portion of the btus you are using. With 4 I can stop at a stop sign and take my foot off the brake and will drive down the road 15 mph using the h2

The new BMW Hydrogen 7 has been implemented into the cross-country journey the 2008 Hydrogen Road Tour. This event produces the worlds most highly recommended hydrogen powered cars around from the worlds automakers.

The huge hydrogen convy travels from Portland, Maine to Santa Monica, California, with one goal on there mind. To influence the congressional leaders to support a nationwide hydrogen fueling infrastructure. The Hydrogen Road Tour is a partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Energy, the California Fuel Cell Partnership and the National Hydrogen Association.

“BMW has already logged nearly 2 million miles in our fleet of 100 BMW Hydrogen 7s. Being on this tour will show more people that hydrogen is truly the best alternative transportation fuel. An internal combustion engine, powered by hydrogen should play an important role in the future of sustainable mobility,” said Tom Baloga, BMW Vice President of Engineering.
